If you have ever purchased a used caravan before, you will
know that damp is one of the biggest problems that plague these otherwise
useful and enjoyable leisure vehicles. You will also know that thoroughly checking
the caravan for the presence of damp before buying will help you to avoid an
expensive repair, but where should you be looking for this sneaky issue?
- Check the corners of all walls in the caravan, as these are places where moisture is known to gather fester.
- Check the lighting fixtures mounted on the ceiling, as these are known to allow damp in if not installed properly.
- Feel the walls for sponginess and look for discolouration, as this suggests that moisture has penetrated the panels.
- Check the seals around the windows and doors of the used caravan, as they can crack over time and allow water to leak in.
- Check for panels that appear to be newer or different to the others in the van, as this could hint that a hasty repair for damp has taken place.
- Feel the floor, especially around the door, for sponginess and check for cardboard beneath the carpet, as damp likes to gather here.
- Check all of the cupboards of the caravan, feeling right back into the far corners, as damp is known to develop here.
When you walk into the caravan, take a big whiff of the air.
If it smells musty, this is also a sign that moisture is present. By checking a
used caravan thoroughly for damp and do not find any signs that it is present,
it is likely that you have found a good quality van that you would not regret
buying.
